Paints & Coatings

Paints & Coatings

There are a variety of paints and coatings for the Tole Painter or Decorative Artist. The most widely used paints are bottle acrylics from manufacturers such as Delta, DecoArt and Plaid. These bottle acrylics come in a great variety of pre-mixed colors (100's). They do not mix reliably (you end up with a muddy color) as they are already mixed and you have no idea which pigments were used. Most of the popular paint lines have pure pigment colors for those who wish to mix their own. Jo Sonja Artists Colors are made for Decorative Painters who want to mix their own colors. All of the above mentioned acrylics dry within minutes allowing you to complete a work quickly. The acrylics mentioned above dry to a flat matte finish. For those painters that desire more lustre and depth, some Tole and Decorative painters use Artists Oil Paints. Oils are very popular with wildlife artists as they do a better job capturing the depth of fur and the gleam of an eye. One of the drawbacks to oils is that they take days or weeks to dry to the touch. This can be a problem if the painting must be completed quickly.
