Metallic Leafing/Gilding

Metallic Leafing/Gilding

Metallic Leafing is the art of applying a very thin layer of metal leaf to a surface. The surface is first coated with a special glue and while the surface is still tacky the metal is applied. The metal is so thin that it takes the shape of the surface below and a somewhat stiff leafing brush is used to pounce the metal onto the tacky surface. How thin is the leaf? Hundreds of times thinner than regular aluminum foil that you might be used to. Traditionally gold was used for leafing as it didn't tarnish and was not terribly expensive when hammered into thin sheets. Today, many other metals are used for leafing including some neat variegated greens, blues and reds. Any surface that is leafed must be coated with a sealer or varnish to protect the fragile leaf.
